These two jockeys fiercely fought for each segment of the Triple Crown in 1978. Steve Cauthen, riding atop Affirmed, won each race by a close margin and became the youngest jockey to ever win the Triple Crown. He went on to great success in Europe and won 2764 over his career. Retiring in 1999 he returned to his roots in Kentucky and bought a stud farm.
Jorge Velasquez was from Panama and was top money maker in 1969. Riding Alydar against Affirmed in 1978 was one of the greatest horse racing competitions. Totaling three races, Alydar lost by less than two lengths. Velasquez was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1990 and had a total of 6795 career wins.
