Payne Stewart was a very popular golfer who not only enjoyed an excellent golfing reputation and graceful swing, but distinguished himself as an exceptional dresser. He wore the throw back golf uniform of patterned knickerbockers and an ivy cap. After his death, golfers honored his memory at particular tournaments by imitating his clothing style.
He turned professional in 1982 and had 24 career wins, among them three of the major championships. In 1999 he played on the winning American Ryder Cup team and also won the US Open. Unfortunatley in October of that year on his way to The Tour Championship in Houston, his private plane crashed and Stewart and the entire crew died in the accident.
