Babe's nickname was supposed to be acquired at age 4 when she hit 5 homeruns in a childhood baseball game. Her athletic talents were many as she excelled in basketball, baseball, golf, and track and field. She won two gold and one silver medal in the 1932 Los Angles Olympics for the latter.
Her Norwegian parents immigrated to the US and settled in Texas and Zaharias was sixth born of 7 children. Though she was not a good student and dropped out of high school, she was a superior athelete in every sport she played, an acclaimed seamtress, and quite talented as a singer and harmonica player. Her golf game was probably her biggest claim to fame and she dominated women's golf for many years both as an amateur and professional. Her career was cut short by serious illness, and she died of cancer at the age of 45.
