Nadia Comaneci (1961)

First gymnast to score a PERFECT 10

Nadia Comaneci (1961 -     )

 

Nadia Comaneci is a Romanian Olympic gold medalist who, at the age of 14, became the first woman ever to score a perfect 10.  She won three gold medals  at the 1976 Olympics and four years later won two more gold medals at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.  In 1981, The Gymnastics Federation contacted Comaneci and informed her that she would be part of an official tour of the United States named "Nadia '81" and her coaches Béla and Márta Károlyi would lead the group.  

 

Comaneci is one of the world's best-known gymnasts and is credited with popularizing the sport around the globe.  Nadia retired from gymnastics after the Summer Universiade in 1981.  She later married Bart Conner whom she had first met at the Montreal Olympics in 1976 as a member of the American team.
