Nickname: "Da Coach"
Ditka grew up in nearby Aliquippa in the coal mining and steel manufacturing area in Western Pennsylvania. The Polish surname "Dyczko" was difficult to pronounce, so the family name was changed to "Ditka."
He spent 11 seasons in the NFL with three different teams: The Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys and was the first tight end to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1973 he started his coaching career with the Dallas Cowboys and then moved on to coach the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints.
